Letters to Whoever Is Rebuilding

For the days it feels like nothing is moving. It is. You just can't see roots.

I want to write to you directly, the way I wish someone had written to me on the days I couldn't tell whether I was healing or just further away from who I used to be.

You are allowed to take longer than you thought.

I don't say that as a comfort I don't mean. I say it because I spent years measuring my healing against timelines that had nothing to do with me, other people's before-and-afters, the version of recovery that looks good from the outside, the idea that by a certain age or a certain point you should be "past" certain things. None of that timeline was real. It was just noise, and I let it convince me I was behind in a race nobody else was actually running.

Rebuilding doesn't look like progress most days. Some days it looks like getting out of bed and doing one ordinary thing. Some days it looks like noticing an old reaction happening in real time and not being able to stop it, and feeling like that means nothing changed, when actually noticing it at all is the change, it just doesn't feel like one yet, because awareness always arrives before mastery does.

You are not failing because it's slow. Roots don't announce themselves. A tree isn't doing nothing for the two years it spends putting everything underground before anything visible happens above the soil. That's not a metaphor I use lightly, I mean it structurally. Whatever you're doing right now that doesn't look like anything from the outside, the boundary you finally held, the pattern you caught yourself in and didn't act on, the session you booked because some part of you knew it was time, that's root work. It counts even when nobody can see it. Especially when nobody can see it.

Here's what I'd want you to know, if I could sit across from you right now instead of writing this: the fact that it's hard doesn't mean you're doing it wrong. Healing was never going to feel like the highlight reel. It was always going to feel like this, uneven, slower than you want, occasionally like you're going backward when you're not. The version of you on the other side of this isn't going to be someone who never struggled. It's going to be someone who kept choosing themselves through the parts that didn't look like progress yet.

You don't have to have this figured out today. You don't have to know exactly what you're rebuilding toward. You just have to keep choosing the next small, unremarkable, real thing. I'm not writing this pretending I don't remember what the middle feels like. I'm writing it because I do remember, exactly, and I know you're allowed to take longer than you thought, and you're going to be okay anyway.
